3epkano are a Dublin collective, formed in 2004 by Cameron Doyle and Matthew Nolan, and
primarily concerned with composing and performing live soundtracks to silent and avant-garde
cinema. Since 2004, the group has played numerous headline shows in both Ireland and the US to critical acclaim. It has also been commissioned to produce new music for a number of prestigious institutions including The National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin Fringe Festival, Film Society of Lincoln Centre and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in New York. The current lineup is Lioba Petrie, James Mackin, Cameron Doyle and Matthew Nolan.
For this show, 3epkano will provide a soundtrack to a 16mm showing of FW Murnau’s Faust (1926). Murnau’s last German film features astonishing photography, magnificent art direction, and special effects which retain the power to amaze. Freed from the constraints of psychological narrative, Murnau’s mastery of cinematic technique places Faust at the pinnacle of the silent era, its barrage of visceral and apocryphal imagery contrasting with the simplicity and directness of its spiritual theme. The 16mm version runs for 90mins with interval.
Please note this is an outdoor show so dress for the weather! In the event of adverse conditions the show will move to All Saints Church, 5 minutes away.
